A Cobra in the Baby Carriage
Cobras in the compound were a fairly common occurrence in
Bhimavaram, and generally if one did not bother them, they did not
bother the people.

One exception occurred one afternoon when the ayah was
preparing the baby carriage for baby Paul’s afternoon stroll.

Wheeling the carriage from inside the screened house, she noticed
a little movement under the baby blanket. Lifting it up, there was a
cobra coiled up inside the carriage.

Needless to say, she shrieked for the other servants to come
running, and the baby carriage was gingerly wheeled outside and the
cobra encouraged to leave.
