Shintoism is an amalgam of polytheistic and animistic traditions.
Each Shinto shrine venerates a different god embodied by a sacred object of
worship, which might be a mirror, a sword, or a wooden idol---nobody knows, not even
the chief priest, who gives an offering of rice or sake before the shrine every day, and
prays for the nation, the imperial family, and the world.
The main god at the shrine at Izumo Taisha, Japan is Okuninushi no Mikoto who,
according to tradition, ruled over this world, but yielded it to the divine ancestors of the
imperial family.
